My previous test was using HDPE plastic containers, the type used for gallon milk and water jugs. It’s translucent and gets brittle over time. So, what about the clear plastic bottles that are used for small bottles of water? PETE is supposed to be a much better material for long-term water storage, and I can now vouch for that fact. Water stored in these containers has a stamp dating for two years after sealing. My bottles of Arrowhead at three years storage (one year after the expiration date and at the point where the HDPE water was unusable) have barely any difference from when they were bottled. There’s a very slight aftertaste, but that’s it.The bottles themselves are warped from the Arizona heat, but are all sealed. It’s best to rotate them at two year intervals, but don’t worry too much about water in PETE containers going bad.
