This is a topic brought up by (shamelessly stolen from) itsadisaster. Bottled water is ubiquitous here, with many different brands and designer waters available. Having a case or two stashed is a handy thing. I make it a practice to always have water with me, and so replace the empty bottles in the car, the kid’s backpacks, my bag, etc. I don’t have a real preference on the brand of water, if I’m thirsty and it’s wet, it works. The bottles, on the other hand…
Beware the ‘eco-friendly’ bottles! These bottles, made with less plastic, are indeed a gram or two lighter. They are also much less sturdy. Squeeze these bottles just a bit while opening and you risk showering yourself (Refreshing? Perhaps, but not what I had in mind.). Sometimes both hands are needed to take a drink without water going down your front instead of down your throat. Squeeze that bottle at the store, and if it’s like Charmin’, just say no.
My personal favorite disposable water bottle is the Aquafina wide mouth one liter bottle. The wide mouth allows ice cubes to pass through, the plastic is sturdy enough for multiple washings and reuse. Now that’s being eco-friendly!

You are correct, not all bottles are created equal. The future is here, biodegradable…not compostable plastic has arrived. Check out this site http://www.ensobottles.com
We are trying to rid the planet of plastic bottle pollution by using a bottle that will biodegrade. More than 70% of plastic will end up in a landfill. We want that plastic to biodegrade and produce biogases that can be captured and used to produce clean energy. It's not the final or perfect answer…we’re working on that one, but for now it is the best solution. Now you can have your bottle…not guilt…a bottle that recycles, biodegrades and provides you the convenience of bottled water. It’s your money, spend it how you wish.

Good stuff tweell — thx for sharing! We squeeze bottles now too since our first experience with eco wasn't too good. Not familiar with above ENSO but wonder how they'd do in triple digit temps. I'm all for greener stuff but if bottles can't handle 6 mos to a year or 2 in desert storage… Will ck out – thx.

Arizona's heat and UV do a number on regular plastic and rubber. Leave it in the sun for a summer and any plastic bottle will be reduced to shards, two summers and it's gone. Biodegrading is easy here.
Funny thing, I actually have a bottle made by Enso on my desk, got it from a water store. It's mediocre in rigidity – after a few uses, it has some extra crinkles in it. We'll see how long it lasts.
