Arizona Volcanoes

Just in case folks figure that volcanoes aren’t local, look at Flagstaff. The San Francisco Peaks were at least as bad as Mt. St. Helens was when that stratovolcano formed and then blew apart. Sunset Crater is a small ash cone, but it erupted just one thousand years ago. There’s a hot spot under the Flagstaff area that has put up over 600 separate volcanoes and vents over the last six million years. Link to the USGS fact page about this volcanic region: http://wrgis.wr.usgs.gov/fact-sheet/fs017-01/
Geologists consider this area a low danger area, since there aren’t many people living nearby and the movement of the field is to the east. Still, knowing about possible problems is always a good idea, especially with the earthquakes and volcanic eruptions happening around the world.
