The yearly gas grill post

It’s starting to warm up here in Arizona. With the Hot season approaching, it behooves us preppers to be ready for what will be along with what may be. So, how’s your grill? A good grill will save you money now and be handy for a loss of power or other possible problem. Cooking inside in the summer means you pay twice – once to cook the food and again to cool your house back down. Settlers here had indoor and outdoor cooking areas so the heat from cooking could be used to heat the home in the winter and avoided in the summer. That still makes sense today, and having a grill means you can cook your food no matter what.
I believe that a propane grill is the best choice for the frugal prepper. It’s cheap, fast, easy, clean and can do much more than just grilling. A bottle of propane will last for weeks of daily use, the same amount of charcoal costs a lot more and takes up more space. Just a turn of a knob, ignition and the heat is there. Minimal mess, no ashes to dump.A good propane grill is essential, scrimping here will mean pain later. A side-burner that has a decent range of heat output is more a need than a want, with this you can cook anything a stove is used for. The grill can double as an oven (a cranky one, but better than my grandparents had). Close the cover and adjust the heat output until it stabilizes at the temperature wanted (love the built-in thermometer), then put your food in on an elevated rack.
Pick up an extra propane cylinder (at least one), swap them when one empties and refill at the earliest opportunity, this way you always have fuel available. A grill means lower power bills now and the ability to cook at your house anytime. Preps that pay you back – hard to find a better deal than that!

I agree 110%! Since we live off grid, we cook almost all of our food on the grill now. Everything from the mundane BBQ fair (including 3 whole chickens at once a 6 hr venture), to Pizza and last week Enchiladas! We use it to heat water in the summer, make chili and with luck I'm going to try and bake! We use a Propane grill (2 of them) as our primary, but also have a charcoal as a back up. Needless to say, I'm passionate about my grill, and it's ability.

Great post and yep – we love propane grills. Got 2 w/ extra tanks. Got a small smoker too. Haven't tried to cook full meals like you KingAzJay – way to go!
